A 43-year-old Papaikou man died Saturday while reportedly picking opihi in Onomea, according to Hawaii Police Department.

A 43-year-old Papaikou man died Saturday while reportedly picking opihi in Onomea, according to Hawaii Police Department.

Responding to 1:39 p.m. call, Hawaii Fire Department personnel found a man’s body floating approximately 200 yards offshore of Onomea Bay. Chopper 1 recovered the body and bought him to shore where the body was released to police.

The body was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted to determine exact cause of death. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Police are investigating the incident. No further information was available at press time.
